Bow Ties

About this recipe

These little fellas are really good, and they go great with coffee or milk. After two bites you’ll be totally hooked, so don’t be shy—have another.

Instructions

Into a bowl, break:

  • 6 extra-large eggs.

Then whisk in:

  • 1 cup sugar,
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil,
  • grated rind from 1 whole lemon (you could use an orange instead),
  • juice from the above lemon,
  • maybe 1 tsp. vanilla extract.

Add:

  • 2 tsp. baking powder,
  • 4 cups flour.

Stir with a spatula or wooden spoon, and then turn onto a flour board. Knead 5-6 minutes, adding more flour as necessary, until dough no longer sticks to your fingers or the board.

Halve dough and roll out like a pizza ¼ inch thick. Cut into 1-inch by 4-inch strips (use a fluted cutter if you have one) and make a vertical slit in each piece. Then push one end through the slit to make the bow tie.

Fry in vegetable oil until golden brown. Sprinkle with icing sugar and store in airtight container.

Notes

  • You can cut your dough with a pizza wheel.
  •
Don't take the 4-inch thing too seriously. You'll probably wind up with some short and some long.
